Rhinos rule roost in junior nursery

HOLY CROSS Junior Rugby League Club rule the roost after a memorable season in the 2007 Balmain Junior League competition.

The Rhinos are celebrating one of their finest campaigns on record after annexing both the Senior and Junior Club Championship trophies; the U/8 Benny Elias Shield as well as premiership titles in the U/11, U/12, U/15 and U/17 Div 1 age groups.

It has been a year to remember for Club president Stuart Stanton, secretary Gary Hinchliffe and the Rhinos fraternity who also supplied a batch of talented young footballers to the Balmain Junior Cup representative teams.

Promising cub Drew Laing received the Jack King Trophy for the U/16 Player of the Year while top forward prospect Matthew Mizzi,17, took out the Jan Carroll Memorial Award for his stand out peformances with the Rhinos’ champion U/17 outfit.

“Our success this year is due to the hard work put in by officials, coaches and players - both on and off the football paddock” said president Stanton.

“We’ve built the club from nine to 18 teams over the past four years by developing our young talent and assembling some of the finest coaches in the district.”

“To win the Club Championship is a great effort - an achievement we’re extremely proud of” he added.

DARREN McLEAN coached the Holy Cross U/17s to an impressive 30-16 victory over Concord-Burwood in a ‘Clash of the Titans’ at Leichhardt Oval.

Led by NSW U/17 lock Matt Hyland, the Rhinos produced a slick second half display to sink the Wolves and capture the Bill Ballard Trophy.

Hyland was supported by forwards Matthew Mizzi, Stuart Bousfield, Shaun Vengoa, Aaron Woods, Sebastian Vourlos and hooker Mitchell Bergin and backs David O’Neill, Ben Kamionka, Brett Peacock, Pat Politoni, fullback Ryan Isberg, Scott White and Daniel Jeffery.

The Wolves - virtually a team of 16 year olds - put up a great battle with top games from half John Nicholas, centres Moses Pangai and Junior Rogica and forwards Paul Mareko, hooker Ajay Vaivaka, Will Brealey, Chris Said, Taniela Vaivaka and Will Tuima.

The Dockers - who lost only two matches all season - were best served by forwards Jesse Hewitt, Sam Brock, Brodie Monroe, centre Peter Flint and half Lachlan Jensen.

STRAPPING forward Sio Tatola starred as the all conquering Holy Cross U/12s recorded a 20-0 Grand Final victory over Strathfield Raiders.

The Rhinos produced a super defensive effort to clinch back to back titles - with the dynamic Tatola creating havoc with his powerful running through the rucks.

Other Rhinos to shine were Chris Zabakly, Saxon Marketo, Jayden Wheelhouse, Jack Stapleton, Matt Woods, Dane Clifford, Josh Camroux, Jarrod Smith and Chris Moana.

Strathfield have a top prospect in fullback Taniela Siale who caught the eye with his punishing defence and powerful runs. Five eighth Misieli Vaikeli, lock Joshua Maree, half Michael Guthrie and centre Salesi Funaki also shone for the well drilled Raiders.

Player of the Year Awards

PROMISING Holy Cross utility player Drew Laing is the winner of the Jack King Trophy for Balmain’s U/16 Junior Player of the Year.

Laing is pictured with Jack - a Ryde-Eastwood Hawks legend - after receiving his award at the recent Balmain Junior League Grand Finals at Leichhardt Oval.

The talented cub caught the eye of club officials with strong performances for Balmain in this year’s NSWRL Harold Matthews Cup U/16 representative series and with the Rhinos in the combined Balmain-St George competition before damaging his knee late in the season.

MATTHEW MIZZI is a deserved recipient of this year’s Jan Carroll Memorial Trophy for the district’s U/17 Player of the Year.

The powerful forward was blooded in Balmain’s S.G Ball U/18 squad earlier this season where he turned in solid displays before helping Holy Cross capture the U/17 premiership crown with a 30-16 victory over Concord-Burwood United.

NORTH RYDE workhorse Ali Musri has collected the Don Graham Memorial Trophy for Balmain’s U/19 Player of the Year.

The rugged Hawks forward turned in non-stop displays in the 2007 competition with his bullocking runs and punishing defence a feature.

Musri has been a consistent performer for the Hawks since joining the club as a raw-boned youngster and an inspiration to team mates with his lion-hearted efforts in the engine-room.

JOHN KAHO has made a triumphant return to Balmain Junior League by snaring the John Stapleton Trophy for the district’s A Grade Player of the Year.

The former Balmain junior representative centre played with Leichhardt Wanderers in his comeback season and helped the club reach the finals in the combined Balmain/St George competition.

Kaho made a huge impact - sparking the Wanderers attack with his power and speed to notch a bagful of tries and forming a slick combination with halves Paul Jarvis and Cameron Nicholls.

Farah a true Tiger trojan

WESTS Tigers trojan Robbie Farah produced a display of raw courage and skill last weekend to rekindle the club’s finals hopes in the NRL Telstra Cup.

The crafty hooker - hampered by a serious hip injury - potted a last-minute field goal to give the Tigers a crucial 29-28 victory over Cronulla at Toyota Park and keep his side on track for a top eight berth.

It capped another superb effort from the classy Farah who is now strongly favoured to take out the prestigious Dally M Player of the Year Award for 2007.

The Tigers star was under a fitness cloud right up until match day and was desperate to play with the club’s season on the line.

He took two pain-killing injections to get on the field and demonstrated his value to the team with a five-star performance against the Sharks.

Farah sparked a second half resurgence with his silky ball skills after Wests had trailed 18-4 at the break.

But four tries in the space of 13 minutes by Benji Marshall, Taniela Tuiaki, Brett Hodgson and Chris Lawrence propelled the Tigers to a 28-18 lead before the Sharks levelled the scores with nine minutes left on the clock.

The Tigers are bent on preserving an impressive home ground record as they gear up for Sunday’s bumper clash with traditional rivals South Sydney at Leichhardt Oval.

Wins over the Rabbitohs as well as embattled Newcastle in the final round clash on Friday August 31 at Telstra Stadium should ensure the Tigers a top eight spot.

Rising young forward Sam Moa produced a non-stop display in attack and defence to earn the Players’ Player award and help the Tigers move into second spot on the table.

With experienced prop Ryan O’Hara, back rower Dene Halatau, lock Tevita Metuisela, hooker Stuart Flanagan, Alan Schirnack and the strong running Moa leading the way the Tigers’ forwards paved the way for a comprehensive win.

Rookie half back Jai Ayoub grabbed his chance when recalled into the team - scoring two tries in a sharp display and combining with teenage five eighth Tim Moltzen to spark the attack.

Utility David Marando and centre Ben Jeffery also shone for the in-form Tigers.

BALMAIN Jersey Flegg team took a giant step towards securing a top four spot with impressive wins over Sydney Roosters and North Sydney in the space of five days.

James Shepherd’s Tiger cubs finished strongly in their deferred midweek match against the Roosters to post a 30-18 victory at Henson Park with young guns Blake Lazarus, Blake Ayshford and Luke McInnes turning in strong performances.

The classy Lazarus backed up to spearhead the Tigers’ 46-16 drubbing of Norths - creating several tries with his clever passing.

Hard running forwards Mitchell Achurch and Herman Retzlaff were other cubs to shine as Balmain raced to a commanding 32-6 half time lead.

Achurch and winger Ben Vengoa each bagged doubles in the Tigers’ nine try rout.

Other try scorers were fullback James Cameron, Daniel Greaves, centre Blake Ayshford, half Marc Russell and lock Damon Harth with Russell booting five goals.

Calling all junior athletes

COULD your son or daughter be the next Cathy Freeman or Matt Shirvington?

With the registration period for Little Athletics fast approaching, parents throughout the north-western suburbs are being encouraged to register their child for the 2007-08 season.

Little Athletics is for all children aged between five and 15 years.

This call for registrations comes with the announcement from Pierre Azzi, licensee of McDonald’s Gladesville, that McDonald’s has committed to support Little Athletics across the state for a fifth season.

“Throughout the 2007-08 season, we’ll continue to work with Little Athletics to encourage more young children in the Gladesville-Ryde area to lead a fit and active lifestyle, and to consider giving Little Athletics a go,” said Pierre.

“With over 12,000 volunteers helping out at Little Athletics Centres each week, it can be fun for the whole family.”

According to Kerry O’Keefe, CEO of NSW Little Athletics Association, little athletics is not just about learning to hurdle like Jana Rawlinson (Pittman) or sprint like Patrick Johnston. “At Little Athletics we help children of all abilities to develop not only their athletics skills but their confidence and self-esteem by promoting positive attitudes and a healthy lifestyle”.

“While we teach children a range of skills for track and field events such as sprints, hurdles, long jump and shot put, Little Athletics is lots of fun and a great way for children to make new friends in their community,” she said.

Little Athletics has centres in Ryde and Western Suburbs. People interested in registering their child can contact Ryde Little Athletics Centre representative Ron Daniel on 0412 202 703 or contact@ryde-athletics.org.au

The team were coached by the widely respected Barnett - a Wanderers legend with more than 33 years of sterling service. Under the guidance of popular Club president Frank Dunne, Nick Stevanovic and the indefatigable Ray ‘Wimpy’ Gerrie, the red and blacks are on the way back after also collecting the U/11 Div 2 premiership and Benny Elias Shield U/7 titles and narrowly missing out on a third when the U/9 Div 2 side was pipped on the post by Concord-Burwood Blue.

Ross Sherriff: Game, set and match

Tennis personality and legendary coach Ross Sherriff (pictured), who could claim to have defeated Rod Laver and Lew Hoad, has died aged 87.

His career spanned more than 57 years, both as player and coach. He was probably best known for developing some of Australia’s greatest tennis talent and arguably coached more prominent players over the decades than any other coach in Australian history.
Among these were Martin Mulligan and Phil Dent. Mulligan was three times winner of the Italian, runner-up at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

Ross coached Phil Dent from the age of 9. Dent reached the semi finals at Wimbledon and the French and was a finalist in the Australian Open. Dent also won many doubles titles with John Alexander.

Ross was a successful player in his own right, winning many country and metropolitan singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles and beating Laver and Hoad in the 1950s. He won the Canterbury Bankstown District Open singles and doubles championships numerous times.

In 1938, Ross, then a teller in the Commonwealth Bank in Cowra, was transferred to Sydney after being selected in Australia’s Davis Cup squad. Shortly after he married childhood sweetheart Doss Dickson, also from Cowra, and lived in Coogee. Soon after, he bought four tennis courts at Crinan Street, Hurlstone Park.

Tony Roche also had a close association with Ross and family. At 15, Roche moved from the tiny NSW town of Tarcutta to Lakemba. He trained every day on the Hurlstone Park courts over the next two years.

Ross’s three children also distinguished themselves at tennis: Fred was a top international player and coached for many years in Grafton and Northern Tablelands; Gail represented Australia once in the Federation Cup and after marrying a Frenchman competed the in cup 10 times for France, and won the French Open doubles title four times; Carol - a long time Denistone resident and North Western Suburbs Tennis Association stalwart - reached the French Open doubles semi-final and the Wimbledon doubles quarter finals. Carol also holds many ITF world singles and doubles titles in senior events.

Ross captained / managed many winning Linton Cup teams and was an official umpire for a number of years through to his late seventies.

Ross’s reputation was founded on great enthusiasm and love of the game, and his teaching style was not only based on the technical side but he also excelled as a strategist.

Ross is survived by his wife Doss who lives in Strathfield; they had been married for 64 years. He is also survived by three children Fred, Gail and Carol, nine grand-children and seven great grandchildren.

Over 120 people gave Ross a wonderful send off at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium. Ross’s final wish was to have his ashes scattered on Billy Goat Hill at Cowra where he grew up.
