Hodgson new Tigers skipper

DASHING custodian Brett Hodgson (pictured) will lead the Wests Tigers rugby league team in their defence of the NRL premiership in 2006.

The Tigers’ points-scoring ace realised a childhood dream when appointed first grade skipper this week in the build up to Friday night’s premiership pipe opener against St George-Illawarra at Telstra Stadium.

He replaces 2005 Clive Churchill Medal winner and premiership-winning captain Scott Prince who is bound for the fledgling Gold Coast Titans next season.

Prince, who wore the Kangaroos number 7 jumper on last year’s Tri Nations tour, ended months of speculation last week when he agreed to sign a four year contract with the Titans.

The star half back also relinquished the Tigers’ captaincy thus prompting coach Tim Sheens to name a new leader for the 2006 campaign.

Hodgson is an inspirational choice as first grade skipper after his outstanding deeds and courageous performances for the Tigers last year.

The lightweight fullback, who has represented City and NSW, capped a memorable season - notching a record 308 points; being named Dally M Fullback of the Year and Leading Points Scorer and helping the Tigers clinch an historic premiership.
Hodgson was at his mercurial best in the Tigers’ 50-6 demolition of North Queensland in the qualifying final at Telstra Stadium.
On a night of personal milestones he racked up 30 points from a hat-trick of tries and nine goals to smash the record for most points in a final set by St George legend Graeme Langlands in 1964.

The classy custodian also eclipsed Darren Lockyer’s record for most points in a season by a fullback and his own record for most points in a match by a Wests Tigers player.

After a disruptive pre-season the Tigers are ready for the premiership proper this weekend and hoping to turn the clock back six months when they toppled the Dragons in a Grand Final qualifier at Aussie Stadium.

The return of Benji Marshall at five eighth will boost their cause along with new recruits Ryan O’Hara, Sam Harris, Keith Galloway and New Zealand international back Jamaal Lolesi who give the Tigers added depth.

O’Hara, a former NSW State of Origin prop, has impressed in trials and will bolster a forward pack that includes John Skandalis, Todd Payten, Ben Galea, Anthony Laffranchi, Chris Heighnington, Dene Halatau, Liam Fulton, Bryce Gibbs, Bronson Harrison and skilful hooker Robbie Farah.

There is no shortage of class out wide with the elusive Hodgson, Lolesi and Daniel Fitzhenry complemented by experienced centres Paul Whatuira and Shane Elford and boom cubs Shannon McDonnell and Dean Collis.

Life Membership for Tigers greats

TIGERS legends Fred de Belin and Bobby Mara (pictured) were bestowed with life membership at last Sunday’s Balmain District Football Club AGM at Balmain Leagues Club.

It was a fitting honor for two of Balmain’s greatest players who carved out illustrious careers in the Sydney first grade competition.

The late Fred de Belin’s son Fred junior and Bobby’s son Garry accepted the life membership pins on behalf of their dads.
BOBBY MARA was a dashing winger and played 146 top grade games for Balmain during 1959-67 where he scored 70 tries and
two goals for a total of 214 points.

He played in the Tigers’ Grand Final sides in 1964 and 1966 before linking with the Penrith club for the 1968-69 seasons where he teamed up with ex-Tigers Laurie Fagan, Bobby Boland, Ron Clothier and George Piper.

Mara starred with the powerful Glebe Police Boys Club in Balmain Junior League before he was graded in 1958 in the Tigers second grade squad that went on to win the premiership - defeating a strong St George team 20-10 in the Grand Final that boasted a young Reg Gasnier.

Bobby was a member of the 1966 Balmain outfit that created history after beating the touring Great Britain team 9-8 at the SCG to become the first club side to achieve the feat.

He also starred in the Tigers’ 1967 team that toppled Manly in the final of the Wills Cup pre-season competition. Bob’s final game for Balmain was a memoral affair - he played fullback in the reserve grade team that defeated a powerful South Sydney 11-7 in the final.

Mara played 26 games with the Panthers scoring 12 tries and a field goal before retiring.

Who can forget that field goal in 1968 that helped Penrith sink the Tigers 18-17 at Penrith Park!

Bob later joined the coaching ranks and guided the Pyrmont Colts B Grade side to a 1972 BJL premiership before assisting Jim Thomson with the Balmain Jersey Flegg sides of the late 1970s and early ‘80s.

It was during this golden era that the Tigers unearthed future champions in Wayne Pearce, Benny Elias, Steve Roach and Paul Sironen and the likes of Paul Morris, Garry Mara and Kevin Hardwick. Today Bob still resides in Leichhardt and follows his beloved Tigers - from juniors to seniors - with a passion.

FRED de BELIN - a Balmain and Kangaroo great - sadly passed away last month.

A Balmain Police Boys junior, De Belin made his first grade debut in 1942 before joining the RAAF and serving during the Second World War. In the services he won representative selection in the force’s rugby union sides before resuming his league career with the Tigers in 1946.

The association with Balmain was mutually beneficial, as he helped the club to Sydney premiership success in both 1946 and 1947. A NSW amateur wrestling champion, De Belin’s great strength and fitness were allied with the skill and mobility making him a damaging and dangerous forward.

He made his interstate debut in 1948 and won his first Australian jersey the same year for the Second Test against New Zealand, playing a big part in Australia’s narrow victory that levelled the series.

A member of the first Kangaroo side to tour Great Britain and France after World War 2, De Belin made three Test appearances on tour and also won selection for the 1949 tour of New Zealand.

He made the last of his eight Test appearances against Great Britain in 1950 when Australia reclaimed the Ashes on home soil for the first time in 30 years.

At the end of that 1950 season he shifted to Junee where he continued to work tirelessly to foster rugby league.

Teak-tough Troy leads Tigers to Ball triumph

BALMAIN junior representative rugby league teams produced lion-hearted performances to sink Illawarra in the Harold Matthews and S.G Ball Cup series last Saturday at WIN Stadium.

The Tiger cubs earned the respect of the Wollongong throng when they registered important second round victories over the highly fancied Steelers in both the U/16 and U/18 Junior Cup competitions.

Ray Windle’s S.G Ball cubs remain undefeated after thumping Illawarra 30-4 in the main game to move to the top of the table on 4 points.

After a lacklustre first half display, the Tigers came out roaring with skipper and fearless forward Troy Adams turning in a crackerjack game - with his powerful running and ferocious defence a feature.

Adams, a strapping young forward from the Holy Cross Rhinos, led by example as the injury-ravaged Tigers extended their 16-4 half time lead with slick attacking play.

It was a gutsy effort from the cubs who lost key players through injury during the match.

Down to three replacements, the Balmain youngsters showed raw courage and skill to repel the Steelers and rush in six tries.
Other cubs to impress were powerhouse back rower Ahmid Omar; winger Scott Goodsir who capped a strong game with two neat tries; five eighth Dane Gernhoefer and fullback Matt Ryan.

BALMAIN 30 (S Goodsir 2, D Gernhoefer, M Ryan, R Jack, C Scuglia tries; D Gernhoefer 2, M Ryan gls) d ILLAWARRA 4 (M Walker try).

SLICK centre Tim Bennetts showed his potential as Balmain Harold Matthews team carved out a courageous 20-12 win over Illawarra in the early game.

It was a much improved effort from Stuart Stanton’s U/16 cubs who controlled the ball and tackled like demons to earn two precious competition points.

Bennetts and co-centre Cameron Mitchell spearheaded the Tigers’ attack with their evasive skills and dash out wide and have quickly formed a potent partnership in the back division.

Mitchell, Bennetts and fullback Junior Rogica all scored tries and Junior Goddard landed a conversion to give the Tigers a 14-6 lead at the break. The Steelers bridged the gap with a try after the interval and mounted plenty of pressure in the second stanza with a glut of possession.

Rookie forward Aaron Woods capped a powerful game for the Tigers when he crashed through Illawarra defenders to seal victory with three minutes left on the clock. Hard working forwards Matt Hyland and Richard Casali and half back Ben James also impressed for the Tiger cubs with top games.

BALMAIN 20 (J Rogica, T Bennetts, C Mitchell, A Woods tries; J Goddard, M Bergin gls) d ILLAWARRA 12 (T Roche, J Turvey tries; N Jones 2 gls).

New Balmain CEO

TIM Camiller has been appointed new CEO of Balmain Tigers following the resignation last week of Danny Munk.
Camiller, the Balmain Tigers’ Chief Financial Officer for the past 10 years, was offered the role of CEO by the Board and has accepted.

After nearly 12 years as Balmain Tigers CEO, Danny is leaving the Tigers in order to pursue an opportunity with Penrith Panthers.

During his time at the Tigers, Danny has established a reputation as an industry leader in the registered club business.
Chairman David Trodden said Danny has played a critical role in shaping the recent history of the Tigers.

“He occupied the role of CEO with strength and purpose during what was arguably the most difficult period in the history of the Club” said Trodden.

“Danny leaves Balmain Tigers in a very healthy state.”

Veteran Tiger on the brink

DECORATED batsman Greg Hayne (pictured) is a cricketer on a mission this Saturday when UTS-Balmain host Hawkesbury in the final preliminary round of the Sydney first grade cricket competition at Drummoyne Oval.

The Tigers’ master blaster gets one final opportunity this season to re-write the record books and become the most prolific first grade run-getter of all time.

Despite a lean trot with the bat post Christmas, Hayne needs just 74 more runs to eclipse the record 12,119 runs set by former Test batsman Warren Bardsley for Glebe and Western Suburbs between 1898 and 1933.

The veteran opener is steeling himself for a big innings against the emerging Hawkesbury X1 in front of his home crowd and is determined to finish the 2005-06 season on a historic note.

It has been a summer of mixed fortunes for Hayne, who recently became only the second player in the history of Sydney first grade cricket to pass 12,000 runs in their career.

Northern District retained the Drummoyne Mayor’s Challenge Cup with a decisive first innings win over neighbours Balmain at Waitara Oval last weekend.

Andrew Sainsbury (91), Matt Daykin (77) and Cameron Eve (69) all posted half centuries to help Northern (9-314) overhaul the Tigers (214) and collect six competition points.

Pace warrior Craig O’Shannessy (2-46 off 15 overs) and rookie spinner Manjot Singh (2-52 off 14) were the pick of a Tigers’ bowling attack that struggled for penetration on a docile Waitara wicket.

KO win for Vic

RYDE’S “Raging Bull” Vic Darchinyan retained his International Boxing Federation flyweight championship title in California last weekend.

The TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star winner knocked out Diosdado Gabi from the Philippines in the eighth round at the Chumash Casino Resort to chalk up his 25th win from as many professional fights.

It was the undefeated Darchinyan’s 20th knockout victory and seventh on the trot.

The teak-tough Gabi went into the fight with 26 wins (18 by KO), three losses and one draw under his belt and had never been knocked out.

Darchinyan is a finalist in the 2005-06 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award to be announced at a Gala Dinner on Thursday May 11 at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

Confused Carrington joins Vikings clan - Touch and Go

USUALLY it’s the fairer sex that are obsessed about their
waistline and general appearance.

However former Balmain hero and Ryde Eastwood touch footy icon Ron Ryan is so concerned about his current brush with obesity that he has accepted a bet to help him reduce his waistline.

Fed up with the endless jibes from teammates about a possible guest appearance on TV show “The Biggest Loser”, Ryan has accepted a substantial bet to lose his “gut’ before an agreed date.

Major betting agencies have shown their lack of faith in the former league star by declining to set a market. They, like many others, believe he has no chance of succeeding.

TWT has been monitoring Ryan’s weight over the past few months with the “Ron Ryan Eater Meter.” Ron’s weight gain is more alarming when compared with that of teammate and premiership winning prop Paul “Nobby “ Clarke.

Although there is still time remaining, Ron faces an uphill battle to reach his target weight and claim victory.

WHO was the First Division player overheard chatting to his wife on the phone last Monday night pleading with her to record the TV program Home and Away for him?

ARE Ross Patten heading towards Third Division?
With four consecutive losses things are looking glum.
Since the New Year the team has floundered with superfit Marc “Potsy “ Webber saying that some team members had let themselves go over the break.

Well it came to a head on Monday night when the Ross Patten team unleashed its pent up fury at referee Graham Churchill.
“Churchie” has spoken with club supremo Garry Noel about holding a referee’s training course over winter in the hope some players will actually learn his interpretation of the game. It’s about time someone took an initiative towards improving the referees’ interpretations as it appears that whoever wears a Ross Patten shirt automatically transforms into a ‘Bill Harrigan’ with
no exceptions. Perhaps next year sponsor Ross Patten will issue each player with a whistle to complete their playing uniform.

What a sight it was last Monday with the normally cocky Craig Carrington being presented with this season’s wooden spoon after a dismal season.

“Carro” is looking towards 2006-07 when Attractive Blinds merge with the disgruntled Vikings after it was heard that Ron Keighran has had enough of the old timers in his team.

Change is being led by Shane Webb who feels Simmo, Jamesy and co have hindered his touch career for long enough and will welcome the influx of new recruits as long as the “Snail” Rhys Provan is not included.

Webb all smiles as Balmain boys win Challenge

BALMAIN Sporting Legends have clinched their third consecutive Shield after toppling their Ryde counterparts in a controversial 2006 Battle of the Gladesville Bridge sporting series.

Versatile athlete Shane Webb was asked to produce territorial proof for his team after the Balmain boys triumphed on a fiery day of sporting challenges.

Tyrone Bowrey and Nathan Donato were also asked to produce personal details to vouch their elegibility to play for Balmain in the annual challenge, according to disappointed Ryde captain Peter Clarke.
“It’s just a win at all costs attitude adopted by Balmain captain Shane Webb” growled Clarke, kid brother of Tigers football legends Craig and Paul Clarke.

“He will try anything to win and these two imports really make the difference to the Balmain side - without them it would be a different story” he added.

Day started with a game of indoor cricket which Balmain won 92 - 87 and followed by a game of touch football that resulted in a 3-1 victory to the Balmain outfit.

Ryde took out the final leg of the series with a 5-3 triumph in the pool challenge at the Garry Owen Hotel.
Ryde although disappointed have vowed to stick by their chosen squad, all of which are Ryde through and through, in a bid to claim back the title in 2007.

A jubilant Shane Webb, who had a smile from ear to ear, had the final say: “Ryde can’t handle the pressure of the yearly challenge. Clarke is always shooting off his mouth, we turn up each year and get the job done - simple as that.”

Cooking up a right treat for his ‘family’

Tristan Steele, head cook at Vimiera Village retirement complex in Eastwood, says he’s got the most wonderful and challenging job in the world.

“Every day I prepare nutritional meals for my big ‘family’,” he said.

“That means people the age of my mum and grandma, who were probably wonderful home chefs in their day. We always relied on mum and grandma for marvellous food (and those great bikkies and cakes after school),” Tristan said.
It is Tristan’s first major challenge after training at a major Sydney college.

“I love working out the menus, and ordering the food. We change the menus regularly. It gives great delight in deciding what my happy ‘family’ would like. We listen to them, and often take-up their suggestions, and even some of their favourite recipes,” Tristan said.

“I have a superb commercial kitchen, with the space and gear to feed hundreds. The roomy air-conditioned dining room is also the meeting place for after meals, where most sit around and discuss the affairs of the nation,” Tristan said.

Vimiera Village is a product of Dr John Knight AM and Medi Aid Centre Foundation, and is a non-profit organisation aimed at providing the local community with high standard living.

The Assisted Living apartments provide meals, linen (changed and laundered weekly), roomy brand new units, plenty of lounge recreational and library use. It also has access to the lovely village centre with its indoor heated pool, spa, and also plenty of recreational areas, in a bushland setting.

To get a tour of Vimiera Village, call David Knight on 9868 7544, or for a virtual tour by Dr Knight (aka Dr James Wright) go to vimieravillage.com.au
